This joint is worth traveling the distance. The atmosphere is charming like grandma's house with friendly smiles to go around. There's a buffet that's reasonably priced for what you can fill your plate up with. My husband and I loved the ribs, chicken, and pulled pork in a mustard-like BBQ sauce - tangy and delicious! Banana pudding comes with the buffet and it is out of this world. Even though I've grown up in Eastern NC my whole life, this is the best southern food I've ever had.

Warm Hospitality with great tasting food. Wife recommends Smoked chix with sweet potato.

Definitely not on the beaten path to anywhere, but damn well worth the effort to visit. Been on my list for almost 3 years but working travels plans around their Friday/Saturday hours is a challenge. And it's located about 30 minutes east of I95/26 intersection, but easy to find. Okay, the chow? That's why we are here, isn't it? BBQ is the name of the game; and there's plenty to sample from: 2 kinds of pulled pork (inside da pig & outside closer to the skin & the smokey fire), chicken and ribs. I'm not a rib guy, but these fell off the bone and were juicy (me thinks someone else here just had s bad day). Ribs also basted in a light SC mustard BBQ sauce. 3 sauces to choose from ... 2 SC mustards, one light, one dark with a bit of tomato in it, and a NC vinegar sauce, thinner than the mustard-based sauces. All three very tasty; tough decision. Sides numerous and traditional, including baked beans, southern green beans, mac&cheese, white rice and Brunswick stew, slaw, salad and banana cream pie. Not a bad choice in the bunch - found the Brunswick stew over rice to be quite nice. It's a little on the high side cost wise, but you can't go wrong with "all you can eat" for $15. Out in the country, house with a double wide attached to it, outside covered with weather-beaten rough-hewn wood siding, meant to make it look 50-60 years old, with smokehouses in the back where the works being done. Pay for meal, get plate, do the buffet and add to it delightful service in the dining rooms from a friendly, energetic, hard-working attendant. Delightful meal - hope I can return some time. Best BBQ I've ever had? Don't know, but Sweatman's is definitely in the conversation. If you love good BBQ, make the effort.

Definitely off the beaten path, but not terribly far from the 95. Food was delicious! Worth the drive! It's a buffet style but you have the option of paying for one time thru the line or as many as you want!

I rarely give a place five stars. This place had it all. Nestled off on the side of the road, 15 minutes off I95, Sweatmans is a five star bbq joint. Ribs are smokey and tender. Chicken falls off the bone. And my favorite was the skins. Oh how i enjoyed them. Be sure to dip them in mustard bbq sauce.

Because Sweatman's is only open on Fridays and Saturdays, and I don't live in the area, I've literally been trying to plan a visit here for years. I did try on a Friday night a few years back, not knowing that they close for the Thanksgiving weekend. So today's lunch was long anticipated by both my husband and me. I have learned, however, to temper my barbecue expectations, as this seems to be one cuisine where people go overboard with the love when it's not all that deserved. Sweatman's is a case in point. There was much to like here and a couple of things that had me shaking my head. I'll start with the positive. This is a self serve (mostly) buffet. Today's choices were baked beans, mac & cheese, butter beans, pork rinds, SC hash and white rice, pulled pork (they smoke the whole hog here, but separate the light from dark meat on the buffet), smoked chicken, smoked ribs, cole slaw, pickles and banana pudding. We both opted for the all you can eat, because we're realists, and I took a bit of almost everything. I skipped the chicken, as it didn't look appetizing. The woman behind the line serves the ribs to you, I guess to stop folks from taking too much. The pulled pork was good. I took a bit of both the inner (light) and outer (dark plus bark) meats, as the dark is moister and keeps the less fatty parts from drying out. I honestly don't know why they separate the meat this way...most whole hog pit masters mix them together. Anyway, both were good, especially with the NC style vinegar sauce that was at the table. They have 2 mustard sauces table side too, and I liked the darker one; the lighter one just tasted like yellow mustard with a few spices to me. The baked beans were terrific; they put bacon in them, and I'm now wondering why more places don't do this. The mac & cheese was also excellent. Had I just tried these 3 things, this might be a different review. But there's the matter of the ribs... There was nothing good about these ribs. They were tough, dry and flavorless, with not even a hint of smoke. They tasted like they had been cooked days earlier. I just don't get it. The hash was decent, but the slaw had way too much mayo in it. On a positive note, the banana pudding was divine, so lunch ended in a very happy way. Service was also very friendly, and I like the old house and the surrounding countryside...it's a beautiful setting. So, if I ever get the chance, I'll return for more of that pulled pork and the delicious sides. I just can't give them 4 stars with ribs that bad.

A BBQ must do! Drove 110 miles while vacationing in Myrtle Beach just for a plate of Sweatman's pulled pork and a couple of ribs. This is what a BBQ place should be like. All you can fit on one plate or for a few bucks more as many trips as you want! Sweet Tea from sweet servers too!

I can't believe I haven't reviewed Sweatman's. The food here is just as good as everyone says it is, and the staff here are absolutely lovely. Sweatman's is out of the way for most people but it's not that far from the I-95 and definitely worth a detour five times as long.

We stopped by on our way to Charleston. The BBQ was delicious, however be sure to bring cash with you. Not a lot of places to sit, but worth the experience.

After a 500 mile drive, we wanted something more substantial than the fast food joints near our motel. Quick Yelp search, and a twenty minute drive we found Sweatman's. What a great place to have a meal! The selections, while limited, were each delicious. The ribs were tender and not over-sauced. The pork and beans tasty, not too sugary, and with slight bite of heat. And yes, the banana pudding was incredible! Don't let the outside fool or scare you off. You'll be grateful afterwards!

Fall of the bone ribs, succulent pork, & slammin chicken.....set in a beautiful home in the country where the fields are endless and the billowing smoke from the BBq sets off an amazing aroma that invites you in for an unforgettable meal, or shall I say experience...... Sweatmans BBQ: One of a kind :)

Not sure how helpful a review of a BBQ joint by a non-fan of BBQ will be, but here goes. About a year ago I read an article in The State (Columbia paper) about a road trip to the Golden Kernel pecan shop in Cameron with a side trip for some BBQ at Sweatman's. On to The List it went, and we finally had a chance to check it out recently. Sweatman's is def off the beaten track but my phone GPS took us right to it. We got there around 2pm so it was pretty empty which was great - no waiting. The building is very cool, looks to be a renovated old farmhouse with plenty of cheerful, casual seating. The staff was very friendly. We both opted for the buffet. Once through was $12 each, but for an extra $3 you could go through unlimited times. They still use the small styrofoam plates mentioned in other reviews, so I was afraid mine was going to give out before I got through the line. To my surprise, it held up just fine. Since I was only going through once, I wanted to make the most of it and got a little bit of just about everything: Green beans - to die for. Best I ever had. Wish I had filled half my plate with them. Mac n cheese - pretty good but you know it's hard to love mac n cheese unless it's hot. I had so much stuff on my plate, by the time I got to the mac n cheese it was room temperature. Next time I will make sure to eat this first! Hash - honestly I had no clue what this was and just got some to be a good sport. It was very tasty and filling over their rice. Rich, red meat (?) sauce with a little bite to it. Think Southern marinara. Baked beans - oooohhhhh mama soooo good! Next time, the other half of my plate will be baked beans! Hot, flavorful, a great sweet sauce - mmmmmm! Cole slaw - I love chunky slaw and theirs barely made the cut (LOL) meaning the shred was almost too small for me, but I did say ALMOST so maybe it was just right? and the dressing was very good, sweet and plenty of it but not so much that it overpowered. Oh yes I supposed there was some BBQ mixed in among this plate somewhere - I opted for the dark meat chicken which was a large cut of leg and thigh with the signature mustard sauce. It was great. Not being an SC native, I know there is a sauce controversy with plenty of folks who can't warm up to the mustard sauce, but I love it. There was just enough on the chicken to make a nice glaze. The meat was very tender and juicy. Now all of this food was very delicious, but I have saved the best for last: the banana pudding. The pudding is served in a small styrofoam cup, maybe half the size of a styrofoam coffee cup, perched on the top of the far end of the buffet counter almost as an afterthought. DO NOT BYPASS THE PUDDING. This will be the best banana pudding of your life (sorry, Mom!). So yeah, next time I hop in the car for a 2 hour drive to Sweatman's for 'BBQ', don't be fooled - I am there for the beans and the pudding. The hubs had the ribs and I believe some of the pulled pork, which he said was also very good. It must have been, b/c he spent half his time licking the sauce off his fingers even though there was a giant stack of napkins right there on the table in front of him :) So yes, we made ourselves miserable with only one pass through the buffet line. Completely overstuffed, very naughty, must run several miles to atone, but that's what happens when it's a buffet and the food is great. My hat is off to those of you who can go back for seconds at Sweatman's.

What can I say... Best BBQ I've ever had. Have the ribs! I tend to be a BBQ explorer all over the south. Mustard sauce was something I've not enjoyed in the past, now Sweatmans has changed my mind. By far whole hog is the best! Worth the ride to get there. Friendly service. Being a BBQ aficionado myself, I wish I had asked for a tour of the pits. Not sure if they do that but it would truly be an honor. DARN!!! I have to go back and eat again! If you like BBQ, and fancy yourself an aficionado, you must check this place out. It is a BBQ bucket list place. Get there!

I have nothing bad to say about this place. I love my BBQ so I was super excited to go to this place. We were in Charleston so we had to go about 50 miles north to get here. Usually with a build up comes a let down but not at this place. We each got the once through and it came out to $20 for both of us. Honestly, it was plenty. You get a plate and kind of stack up as you will with the employees handing out ribs and other select items. The food was very solid (not amazing) and was worth the trip. The ribs were done correctly (tender but not completely falling off of the bone). Sides were the hash - which is the thing I will miss the most, mac and cheese: good, and a pork skin which was great. Banana pudding is awesome, but hard to mess that up. The main items were the ribs and the pulled pork. Ribs are lightly glazed with a mustard sauce which isn't overbearing at all. Pulled pork is unsauced. At the table there are two mustard sauces, a standard bbq sauce, and vinegar. Pulled pork with the mustard sauce and some vinegar is the best combination I've ever had. Overall it was worth the trip out of the way. If I lived in Charleston I would probably come here 2-3 times a year.

Read a lot about this place and we were in the area and thought we would give it a try. OK first thing, unlimited buffet (except ribs & skins) is $15.00, not so cheap. They give you the most flimsy styrofoam plates in the world, it hard to put much food on them and you have to go back to the register to get another if you want seconds or more. Also, being a buffet the food was just barely warm. The ribs seemed to have been braised and had not one bit of a smoked flavor or any evidence of a smoke ring. A couple of pieces we had at the table were so dry you could not eat them. Pulled pork was separated into white and dark meat and was moist but not much flavor. Chicken was just OK, a little dry. Mac & cheese was a disaster, dry, cold and clumped together. The highlight of the meal were the baked beans, flavorful with bacon bits. We all decided this would not be worth the trip again, we have all had much better. Nick & Jim's comes to mind.

If you want home style BBQ this is the place to go. It's about a 10 minute ride off 95 and so worth it. They serve their food Buffett style with chicken and ribs that fall right off the bone. Their homemade sides and sauces are so yummy! I would stop back again for sure ! Also the Buffett makes it's quick for you to go in grab your food eat and go. They also have some sandwiches that you can order.

All you can eat at that price was a great deal. They only allow two ribs, but I didn't mind as they were the only item I didn't enjoy. Tasted boiled. Rest of the food was good. Coming from KS, it was definitely different BBQ than I'm used to, but I enjoyed having different flavor in my bbq. Service is typical southern service. Always cordial and welcoming.

The best bbq we had while in SC!!! After. Being duped several time by places that claim the be the real thing we found sweatmans. This place is amazing. The staff is very friendly. Mr. Charles even took this time to give use a tour of the smokehouse and the cooking areas making the whole experience special!! Thank you sweatmans crew for doing what you do!!!

Ate a late lunch at Sweatman's today and had a great meal. I have read a variety of reviews of the restaurant. Our experience was very good, highlighted by the incredibly helpful, friendly staff. They were all smiles. The pork BBQ is good, and the hash is very good. Reminded me of Dukes BBQ in Cameron, SC and Mr. Dukes. Not quite as good but close. Worth the drive to get there...great location, great food, and fantastic folks ready to greet you!

wow!!! i have been eating here since I was a child. Get there around 5 on Friday or Saturday to get in and get the Kracklins! This has the ONLY hash I will eat. I love everything they have. This is my favorite place to eat while visiting my family down there. After a long day on the lake this is a great place to fill your belly for not a lot of money! Best BBQ in south carolina!

Holly hill, this is good barbeque. Most of the barbeque I eat in New York is expensive and is, I believe, Kansas style (dry rub, tomato-based sweet sauce). I'd never had Carolina style and I'm not sure I want to go back to what I was eating before. Mustard and pork BELONG together. The food here is great and, unless you're looking for chicken, the $10 buffet is where it's at. There was a line when we arrived, and we were definitely the only 20-somethings in the place, but we felt welcomed. The way it works: Walk in, wait on line, order and pay cash for what you want, heap up at the buffet/wait for your plate in the crowded serving room, and then walk out for a seat in one of the many dining areas. If you want dessert, order it the first time you go up to avoid waiting in line again - there is no waiter service, just folks who'll refill your drinks. Iced tea pitchers and napkins are already on the tables, although utensils are not (don't forget to pick them up above the sauces on the buffet line). I'd recommend getting your meat dry and bringing along a large cup of sauce. The two standout items for me were the ribs (holy crap! I've never had ribs like these before! If you're thinking of ribs like they serve them at Chilis, forget everything you know) and the hash. I'm pretty sure I could eat hash over rice for dinner for the rest of my life. We tried the white and dark, but really went back for the hash and ribs. They do have white bread and pickles available if you want to make a sandwich out of the shredded white and dark. They were, unfortunately, out of banana pudding, but the prices are ridiculously good and the atmosphere is fun. I was the cheesey tourist with the SLR camera snapping pictures and everyone was very good natured about it. I'm not sure how far I'd be willing to drive for this barbeque, but I kind of want to drag my boyfriend from New York to here to try this. It's worth going out of your way to try this place. Wish we'd followed Billy V.'s advice and asked to see the pits. Also, Use the Eutaw address you find in the reviews - we used that in our GPS and it took us right to the restaurant. Not sure where the Gemini Drive address takes you.

So I sort of have this theory that it's hard to mess up barbeque, which also means that it's hard to truly excel at barbeque. So, I'm going with 4 stars rather than 5 not because it's not totally freaking delicious, but because I don't really believe there is the the necessary challenge within this cuisine to fall outside of the 2-4 range. The porch out front is awesome. Go sometime business is slow and spend an extra hour or two on the front porch. Banana pudding is very very very good.

A bit of a drive but worth it. I've been coming here for more than 10 years and it's still one of the best southern BBQ places to eat!

  • Roger Y.

A great disappointment. We arrived at 7PM (they close at 9PM) so I expected them to live up to the "All you can eat" - at least all you can fit on 1 plate. When I asked for ribs they gave me 3 puny size ribs - when I asked for more they said they could not because they had to reserve the ribs for those coming later. It was just as well because the ribs had absolutely no barbeque flavor or taste. There was plenty of pulled pork which was OK and all the other fixins were OK - but I come to these places for the ribs and frankly, the "ersatz" ribs that I make in my oven are far superior to what I had at Sweatmans - something ain't right here. Not worth the trip.

Really great barbecue. Realllly good vinegar-based sauce. Yum! Worth the drive as this is the real deal 100-mile BBQ. Raves about the baked beans and the banana pudding from the rest of my crew. This establishment lost a star on account of the limited buffet options for sides: beans, coleslaw, mac'n cheese, coleslaw, pickles.

  • Amy B.

Yum. Down home food in a homey atmosphere. Prices are great ($10 to load your plate up 1x at the buffet). Meat is tender, and I think they might season it with a bit of the mustard sauce. It really makes it tasty. We're from North Carolina, and I thought that the vinegar sauce they had was the best I've ever tasted. It seems like people have a hard time balancing that type of sauce out, but this one was the perfect mix of sweet, tangy and a little bit spicy. The stew is awesome. Loved it on top of the rice, and I'm not even much of a rice eater. Cole slaw is the standard stuff (like KFC) but it was good. The mac and cheese was a little artificial tasting--i've had better. Baked beans were great, and had bits of meaty pork mixed in. Loved the sweet tea. it had just the right amount of sweetness! I have to go back down to South Carolina in a few months for work, and I'm already planning a way to get myself in close proximity to Sweatman's!

OH MAN! This is the find of the Century. No Lie! First of all... I saw this, like other's on Anthony Boudrain's show. So don't laugh, my review is solely based on someone that isn't use to the south. Number 1 Bring a GPS. That was my mistake. I thought it would be easier to find than it was. The town signs are small and some have two names per road. The Highway Signs like 176 and 453 are totally confusing. Secondly, from Downtown Charleston, it's like 1 hour 15 minute drive. Get off of 26 West on 117 to Holly Hill. It's a 5 mile drive into town. Downtown is looks like the set of Mississippi Burning. Some dusty town with a few shops open downtown with an old railroad track running through it like the days of yesteryear. I took a wrong turn. One way I went was huge new plantation style homes. Go the other way, there were old almost broken down country homes surrounded by cornfields. ALSO: There is little cellular service out there..... So you blow a tire.... Don't expect anyone to find you for days. So you pull up to this dirt lot at Sweatmans... The pictures I see don't do the place service. It's like the house they used in the movie the Texas Chainsaw Massacre.... Some old country home underneath large trees that kind of mask the house's true state of being. In the back is a little shanty the Anthony went to go look at the pit. But getting through all of that.... you come through one of two doors on the side. One is for takeout (the Right) the other is for the restaurant. The Bufffet. The Buffet is 9.35....$10 even. Cash only. Includes iced tea and water. Don't even know if they have soda. You can have unlimited portions of Rice and Carolina hash, White and Dark pulled Pork Meat. Ribs, and Pork skins. WOW!!! I've NEVER EVER had barbeque like this. This was an unbelievable experience. I can't go to any other place again and look the BBQ the same. Yeah, you sit family style with other people. A bunch of old kitchen tables with plastic mats that have Sweatman's logos on it. BUT THE DINING IS TRULY SOMETHING THAT IS AMAZING. But for being open Friday and Saturday every week, and on the food channel... I found it odd that there were only a hand full of people eating there for lunch on Saturday. NO LINES ! Even better for the rest of us. MAKE THE TRIP to Holly Hill. It's worth it. =)

This place serves really good BBQ. It's very authentic with paper plates, plastic tablecloths, etc. I had ribs, slaw, and the rice with hash. It's a buffet, sonyou won't leave hungry. The south carolina BBQ sauce is mustard based. It's good. This place is hard to find and doesn't have a phone number listed (I doubt they have a phone), so get your directions figured out before you leave. A beer would have been nice with the ribs, but they don't serve it. The sweet tea was a good substitute. This place is a must stop for anyone traveling in the Charleston area.

After having gone to a bunch of Barbecue staples in the south (excluding North Carolina), I have to say that Sweatman's is my favorite. When you go in you pay for a 'once-through' or an 'open buffet.' With the first option you go through the food area once and grab as much as you can (there's really no limit to how much you can take) and with the second you can keep returning. I think it was $5-$7 for a once through so I took that option. I grabbed some beans, mac and cheese, green beans, chicken and ribs. My favorites were the mac and cheese and ribs, although what little I got to taste of the chicken was good, also. The base they use is a mustard one (which I had never had before) and it was delicious! Really different, but good. And the ribs were falling off the bone and moist. I was stuffed and couldn't really eat any of my sides which is disappointing because you can't take any leftovers to go so it was basically a huge waste of food. I want to give them more stars, but it was really hard to throw out all of that food. Why don't they just offer boxes to take home whatever you don't finish like anywhere else?

  • Pui Ying S.

This is good, not great. Price for all you can eat is about $10 and the banana pudding is delicious and likely full of addictive crack. The staff here is very friendly. The BBQ pork is broken up to white and dark and I found white more tender while dark is drier. The hash is wonderful (still not sure what the heck it's made of), and the ribs and cracklins are the stars. After two plates I was so full I felt my stomach would explode and I fell asleep in the car and apparently I looked like a corpse. The address is wrong on yelp and the address is: 1427 Eutaw Rd., Holly Hill, SC 29059 which is across from the Uhaul. (Thanks I.F)

Finally made the drive from Charleston to Sweatman's last Saturday and was not disappointed. Food was excellent, drive was manageable and the area was not nearly as backwoods as Id been led to believe. Like many of the posters before me, I was glad I wasnt driving since I could barely keep my eyes open. The only thing that kept me awake was the AMAZING banana pudding I got to go. 4 stars because I would appreciate more choices on the buffet but I do plan on returning to get some more of their wonderful BBQ.

Yes, everything you read is true. This is the place to be, especially if you like South Carolina mustard type BBQ, or if you never tried it. I really can't describe how good that meat is and my eyes are welling up as I realize I am hundreds of miles away. Yes, the sweet tea is perfect, not too sweet. The banana pudding is wonderful. Here is something you may not know: If you are driving from the North East to Hilton Head or to Florida, this is not too far off of 95. Go there. Come back here and thank me.

The best ribs I've ever had in my life--I went back 2x for both the ribs and cracklins. Jim returned 3x for more barbeque and hash (the best he or his mother had ever had; I found it a bit sweet for my tastes). Yes, this is 150 mile barbeque, and well worth it. Orangeburg county has great barbeque, and on our next visit we will do a side by side comparison to Duke's. 2 sauces--one a great vinegary mustard, and we think it's made with pickle juice because of the hint of cloves, the other sauce too sweet for our tastes, but with a nice tang and hint of honey. The sweet tea tasted like it was sweetened with cane syrup--YUM. The barbeque is served undressed, which is how it ought to be served. Drench with sauce if you must, but here you just want to take bite after bite of succulent pork that almost makes you want to cry because it's so good and tender with a great pig flavour that's unencumbered by excessive smoke or sauce. Cracklins--I think I might have died and gone to heaven. Unless my heart stops. Also good dipped into sauce. They do run out so get there early. Ribs: tender, the right amount of fat, and although I'm learning how to eat with my fingers, I didn't mind here. Yes, I went back twice and got another 4 ribs, which, by the way, were huge 6" sections each with at least an inch of meat/fat. Tender and just fantastic. I wish I had better words to describe it, but I don't. I don't get the rotten attitude a PP mentioned--everyone was friendly and sweet to us, and we are obviously not locals. The buffet is $10 for lunch, with a small takeaway platter at $7 (I think). The hardest part of the drive home was the smell of barbeque filling up the interiour of the car. We were both stuffed to the gills, but managed to safely take that container home to MOM. Google will send you past the actual turn off, so just keep your eyes open when you're within 1/2 a mile and using a GPS. The road is a little funky, and has more stripped tire parts than I've ever seen elsewhere. There's also a cop who will make you nervous while you're driving here. A great place for all locals plus some of the lucky out of towners who manage to get here. I can't wait to go back. Also--who cares that the only sides were pickles, coleslaw, white bread, hash, and rice? I didn't head there for anything but the pig. Regarding service: there's a woman heading through the dining rooms (there are at least 4) to refill tea as well as ice, who was pleasant and friendly. For take out, there's the window on the side of the building, otherwise head up the ramp towards the front, walk into the renovated farm house, and say hello to the friendly people behind the counter (if they aren't there because they're serving other customers, someone will poke their head in to acknowledge you and let you know they'll be right over).

My brother and I drove about 2 hours to try this place. We wanted to try it since it was on No Reservations on Travel Channel. The place had good BBQ, but I would have liked more choices. The buffet has; rice, hash, BBQ separated in white and dark, ribs, skin (if you're lucky), cole slaw, and plain bread. Your drink choices are tea and water. That's it. I can think of a thousand other BBQ places that are better, if for no other reason that they at least have beans, dessert, or some type of potato dish. I must admit I loved the skin. But all in all, I wouldn't recommend a trip to visit this place. Not worth it. Also, Yelp needs to fix the address, as it is wrong.

Sweatman's is very good, not exceptional but well worth the trip. My wife and I have been enjoying a summer "BBQ tour" of BBQ places within an hour or two from our home in Mt. Pleasant. Between June 9, 2012 and yesterday (June 28), we have visited 7 different locations. The experience has been eye-opening. When you get to sample that much BBQ in such a short amount of time, you can really compare products. We have been writing about our experiences after each visit ( destination-bbq.com ). What we have found is that there are levels of BBQ (and, mind you, we are primarily concerned with the BBQ itself, not the whole plate). There is elite BBQ (Scott's and McCabe's) and there are levels below. Sweatman's, we believe, falls in the group just below elite. Very, very good and well worth the trip. Also, know that while their food is set out "buffet-style" this is not an "all you can eat" buffet. That is disappointing if you go in expecting otherwise. Overall, the sides are among the best we've tried. In fact, if we were judging on the whole plate, Sweatman's would equal or beat Scott's, whose sides don't compare. But again, for us, it's about the BBQ itself. In the end, we agreed Sweatman's food is worth the hour plus trip from Mt. Pleasant.

We made the unfortunate choice of going here on assumption of Anthony Bourdain's recommendation. The barbeque was very mediocre, it was cold and just seemed like they didn't care. I know they only give out a couple of ribs per person but the ribs were terrible also. I would definitely not recommend this place it is not worth the drive or time.

Update: Now that I've moved further away, my standards have changed. I am now willing to drive 200 miles out of my way to eat there, and I've scouted out nearby landing strips with the idea of maybe taking a Cessna down one weekend (7 hours total flight time in a 172).

  • Ju L.

I wasn't sure what to expect and am not a big barbecue fan, but this was surprisingly good. It's a mustard-based barbecue, and they only do a buffet. I saw it on Anthony Bourdain's "No Reservation" where they showed them roasting the hogs. Basically, the buffet is mainly pork-based. You get rice, hash (the best part of the meal!), two kinds of pork (white and dark meat), ribs and white bread and tea (sweetened or unsweetened) for USD 10. They also serve a good banana pudding which is about USD 0.70 per cup. It's a very down-to-earth place and is only open on Fridays and Saturdays and is well worth the trip -- it's about 1 hour outside of Charleston, SC.

Oh my gosh...I am so glad I got to experience this place. We found ourselves in Georgia traveling to Charleston and decided to seek this place out. We saw it on an episode of Anthony Bourdain's No Reservations and were intrigued. It is off the beaten path but definately worth the stop. Only about an hour from Charleston. This is whole hog bbq which is very good. The pork is hand sorted into dark meat, white meat, ribs and skin. There is cole slaw, white bread and hash. Everything is amazing!!! The pork is juicy and full of flavor. They have this home made mustard bbq sauce that should be studied by scientists...it is heaven!! It is a yellow, mustard, vinegar bbq sauce that turns your meal from delicious into the experience of a lifetime!!!!! Oh, if they bottled and sold that stuff I would buy cases!!! This is definately an interesting place to go. It's like eating at your grandmother's table. Sweet tea in a pitcher on the table as well as a roll of paper towels. The all you can eat buffet costs a whopping $10 and you will be stuffed for the entire day! But save room for the bananna pudding if you can scrounge up another $0.66...it is delicious!! The address is a bit misleading...it is on HWY 453....big, giant pig on the sign. Stop if you are in the area...you won't be disappointed.

This is one of the best, if not the best que in the lowcountry. The only reason it doesn't rate up there with Music Man's BBQ in Moncks Corner, is that the buffet is a little more and it has less items on it. With that said, the sauce is my crack. The first time I saw it, it was like nacho cheese, so thick and yellow. Oh man! The taste is like heaven on earth. If it wouldn't gross my wife out, I could easily drink a gallon of the stuff. Yes, I said drink. Their nana puddin' is astronomical, other than my wife's, THE BEST I've ever had. What's cool about it, is that it's out in the middle of nowhere. You're just driving along a country road and then it pops up in the middle of a cotton field. It looks like a rough old farmhouse on the outside, but it's nice and homely on the inside. Even though it's 30 minutes from Goose Creek, I still like the go out there from time to time.

I have never received more horrible customer service than I did at this place. My mother is always raving about how good it is, and today with some out-of-town family visiting we decided to go. I don't eat pork, so I ordered the BBQ chicken. I was told they were out of chicken, so I asked if I could pay for a child's buffet since I wouldn't be taking any pork, and $10.85 for some rice seems a bit steep. The younger woman working the register was going to allow this, but the older woman next to her (the owner?) yelled NO! so I asked if I could order a side of rice. The younger woman let me do this, and my daughter got the full buffet, and as we paid I was told "Go ahead & get your rice from the buffet" but as I walked toward the buffet, the older woman ran over, scooped me 1/2 spoonful of rice onto a plate and handed it to me. That's all I was getting? A tiny mound of white rice for $3? I wasn't trying to be difficult, I'd ordered the chicken. It's not my fault they ran out, so I feel that good customer service would try to accommodate that instead of acting like I was putting them out by ordering just rice. I will definitely NOT be returning here, nor would I recommend it to anyone.

Sweatmans is the most incredible barbecue. Worth the drive! I have had the pleasure of experiencing barbecue in many locales but this is tops. Number 1 in taste, service and atmosphere. A unique southern culinary experience. The very best!!!!!!!!

Sweatman's has changed ownership, and based on my recent visit I believe it is no longer deserving of the quite level of praise that it had earned. Know in advance: IT IS NO LONGER ALL-YOU-CAN-EAT. Now, you can choose between a Small Plate that they prepare for you or a Large Plate that you mound with food yourself from their (now pseudo-"buffet"). The single-plate system doesn't bother me in itself, since lots of bbq places I enjoy are not all-you-can-eat. However, I drove many hours out of my way to eat here--a ritual I have done every year for some years as part of an annual trip I make out that way--and I would like to be able to buy as much or as little as I want. They should charge by weight. I'd be glad to pay whatever they ask. But having arrived at Sweatman's hungry and ready for my annual pig-out, I was dismayed to learn that a Large Plate (the most one can order without ordering TWO plates) only gets you two ribs. These are small-ish ribs. I would have been happy to have bought a couple of more ribs--I look forward to this all year--but their system makes it difficult. I piled my plate with a ridiculous amount of food, since I knew I had only one chance. But I ate all of it. Still, wouldn't it be more sensible to allow me to make a plate of a normal size and just go back for seconds IF I am still hungry, rather than tempt me to put more food on my first and only plate than I might be able to eat? In their attempt to reduce waste, they might actually be encouraging waste from people who figure it's better to err on the side of too much than too little. The ribs aren't the highlight anyway--the pork is the star here. But even the pork is somehow not as stellar as I remember it being. Maybe it lacked enough smoke flavor and seemed a bit dry. I couldn't care less about the banana pudding or cole slaw--for me, barbecue is all about the quality of the pork. I think I will take a pass on Sweatman's on next year's trip out that way. Nothing lasts forever.

This is THE BEST BBQ in SC.....Hands Down!! I grew up on Sweatman's BBQ. I don't like going anywhere else (unless it's Bessinger's) for some great BBQ. I try to go back at least once a month, but I haven't been able too which saddens me. Oh, and you can't forget the Banana pudding!! YUMMY!! I LOVE SWEATMAN'S!!!

youtube.com/watch?v=XT60… Went here on Saturday with my Mother. Actually found it on Thursday, but they were closed. Only open on Friday and Saturday so we drove back down from Columbia. Sweatman's has to have some of the best pulled pork I've every had and I ate pulled pork at different restaurants all over South Carolina during the last two weeks. Amazing pulled pork at Sweatman's and their sauces are out of this world too. Mom didn't like the hash, but I think it was just a different style than she was used to. Still more than worth the drive and some of the best pulled pork in South Carolina and that's Bar-B-Que to me, pulled pork and mustard sauce. It doesn't get any better. Drive here and try it. You won't be disappointed.

I believe this to be the best BBQ in the entire state of South Carolina. I've had several others that were also great (Shealy's, Palmetto Pig, etc.) but this one is #1. Their hash is by far the best I've ever eaten. My family makes special trips an hour away just to pick up from here.

Awesome. I no longer live in South Carolina, but I still dream about making trips to this place. Trying to find this place is all apart of the adventure. My first time there, our GPS took us to some random person's house. I thought my buddy was going to get shot w/ a shotgun when he went up to the random person's house to ask if it were sweatman's. The owner of the house was nice enough to point us in the right direction. When you get to sweatman's, you may think you're re-enacting a scene from deliverance, but keep your eyes on the prize (delicious mounds of ribs and trimmings) and be brave. Inside, you'll feel like you're in a country home, because it is, but you'll also find a cafeteria style line of amazing pork goodness. For about $10/person, you'll get yourself two different types of pork ribs, pulled pork, pork rinds, rice, has and cole slaw. Did I tell you this is all you can eat? Don't forget to try their banana pudding. It's not apart of their buffet, but for some pocket change, you can try it out - delicious.

Corn field, corn field, corn field, house, corn field, corn field, house, corn field...yes, you are in the right place. There is a fork in the road near the 1313 Gemini Drive address and you will see the Sweatman's sign (pig and all) from there. You will feel a bit as if you accidentally wandered into someone's grandmother's house in this particular corn field, but you will be so happy that you did if you are there on Friday or Saturday from 11:30 am to 9:00 pm (if you're there any other time, I think you may just have to curl up in the corn field and cry yourself to sleep). Absolutely get the buffet and enjoy all of the hash (made with magic...seriously), dark meat pork, and ribs that you can eat. You even get your own pitcher of sweet tea at your table to share with your fellow house "invaders". And as for the best 64 cents you will EVER spend...let's talk about the banana pudding. The first exclamation that escaped my mouth after sampling the sweet stuff was, "I want to live in this!" It has now progressed to living in Sweatman's banana pudding and next door to my neighbor, the Poogan Porch biscuit (who I drop in on quite often). Even if you just are stopping by the side porch for take-out, make sure you make the trip out to Holly Hill for some lowcountry bbq. Although, I will say a great deal of the fun is witnessing the mix of folks and hearing the mix of accents enjoying the q in this unique setting. Sweatman's is closed for vacation the last two weekends of July and the first weekend in August so make sure to get at least a pint of banana pudding before this time to keep the withdrawal symptoms at bay until a fresh supply is available in mid-August.

This is the best BBQ you will ever have!!! It's a bit of a drive from Charleston but it's well worth it.

My newest favorite (as of 11/16/07) barbeque in the Charleston metro. It is a drive to Holly Hill, but enjoy the country scenery along the way. First off, the address is slightly misleading. You don't make that last turn on Gemini, but you'll run into the building before that street. It is right out in the open, so you won't miss it. Their "big deal" is the buffet. If I hear you went there and got chicken, I'll be waiting for you by the banana pudding cooler to play some whack-a-mole with you. Try the hash. Try the hash. Try the... you get it. It's the best hash I've ever had. Next, skip the "light meat pork" which my wife tried first. Get the dark meat. The pulled pork has the PERFECT mix of crisp edges, soft, tender inside, and a hint of smoke. I've tried many, many bbq joints, and this one is the one you hear South Carolina BBQ Association judges talking about on smoky back-room web forums. Que here comes with a light basting of their mustard sauce - while I've had better mustard-base sauce, it is very good, and complements the meat to perfection. There is also the light-tomato base that you probably have never had unless you live in North Central SC or a couple other BBQ joints in Carolina. Get a little cup of the tom-base, but stay with the mustard. As you slide down the buffet, dive into the tray of ribs. Ladies, don't fret. All the fat melts off when they smoke it. My wife tried one at the very end of the meal and regretted not getting a big plate of them. And she hates fat. Moving along, the rest of the buffet is simple. Slaw, and two kinds of pickles. Vegans go home hungry. Drinks? No booze, but the sweet tea will hit the spot. They have unsweet too. You can get soda, but that costs extra. NOW, you're in the south, people! (lol) Banana pudding is 64 cents extra What? That's what the girl said... I'm just passing that along. But you want it! It is the best darn banana pudding I ever had. My wife agreed, but said to not tell her mom. Her mom hasn't figured out the internet yet so I think we're safe. Staff is so nice, and go out back to take a look at where they cook it. Atmosphere? When my wife and I went there we had hunters still in battle gear at one table discussing their next kill, while we had "upper crusty" Charleston folks at the next table talking about why Starbucks is an experience (no kidding on either account) Price? Try 8.50 for all you can eat! CASH ONLY, CASH ONLY. I didn't see an ATM there either, so bring a little green with you. Hours? - It is only open Friday or Saturday, so I hope you read this before making the drive. If you are a barbeque fan, go to Sweatmans. If you are traveling to Charleston, you can easily hit Holly Hill on your way in or out of town. I recommend doing it on your way in, because I guarantee you will eat so much that you won't be in the mood for much driving afterward.

This is a visit to BBQ church. You go in, make your 10$ offering then fill your plate with pig and sauce. Pitchers of sweet or unsweet tea are offered. Everyone sits and eats quietly with reverance and the hopeful blessing of skin. Enlightenment is acheived and all is good.

Very good Q. I love the mustard-based hash, also. This and Duke's in Orangeburg are one of the best in SC. Anthony Bourdain was here, too! I am a fan of mustard sauce and orange hash, which you don't get in North Carolina.Up there it's vinegar-based in the east and ketchup-based in the west. I don't dislike those styles, but I prefer mustard-based and pulled pork. In some Q joints, especially in NC, they chop up the Q, which I think makes it greasier. Also, in SC, i'ts all you can eat, but not in NC. Go SC Q!

Get there!

Oh my goodness gracious! I just discovered Sweatman's yesterday thanks to the Food Network website while on a drive to Coastal SC from visiting family in NC. It's definitely off the beaten path, 10 miles or so off I-95, but set your GPS and you'll be in for a treat! Only open on Fri and Sat, from what I understand, but open all day 11:30-9:00. We bought a huge to-go order to share with friends including BBQ, NC sauce, cole slaw, hash, rice, and banana pudding. Wowie! Everything was so good, but my favorite was the hash, which I put on over rice. So delicious! And we know good BBQ!

Sweatman's may be a bit out of the way, though it's less than 20 minutes from I95, it feels like you are miles away from anything. The bbq here is incredible though. Only open on Fri and Sat, it's well worth the detour from 95 on a long drive. The food is served buffet style with the option of all you can eat or as much a you can fit in a single plate. The sides were pretty good, particularly the beans and Mac and cheese. The bbq was incredible though. The pork was my favorite and the odd yellow mustard based sauce was actually delicious. Very friendly service as well.

I happend to find this restaurant luckily. I was in a traffic jam crossing a bridge and got bored in a passenger seat. I opened up yelp app as usual. I love both BBQ and Anthony Borden. They open only weekends. What?!?So I gotta try this restaurant automatically. It is middle of nowhere. Relaxing countryside. There are big trees around the building. As soon as I entered, I remember a tv show. I knew it! The menu is really simple. Most meals are under $10. I chose their buffet for $15. Included pitcher drinks. There is a caution. Even you order the buffet, you can get ribs up to 2. What?!? That was the best one. I wished I could have eaten more. Their chicken was good too. Coleslaw has too much mayonnaise. Beens are tasty. Mac and cheese is ok. Banana sweet is not my cup of tea but my husband ate 2. There are 3 different kind of BBQ sauces on the table. I didn't use the. Meats are pretty flavorful and delicious. I just forgot use it. When I got really full, I remembered about the sauces and tasted them by themselves. They are good too. The staffs are really sweet. The cashier and waitresses especially. I wanna buy lots of ribs next time. I'm not sure there is an option like that tho. Ahhh, getting hungry for BBQ!

This place was amazing. Directed here by Anthony Bourdain's trip to Charleston, I had to definitely try it out. The story here is that this place works all week, cooking up BBQ, and serves it only Friday and Saturday. A week long BBQ place? Oh yeah. Finding the place was very unique, about 15-20 minutes from I-26 I think it was sort of in the middle of nowhere, however when I got there...what I saw was a house turned into a restaurant. Nice little decorations, and a signature picture of Anthony Bourdain on the wall, there's momentos all over the place and its deserving. Now. what's so amazing about this place you say? Let's just start with the all you can eat buffet. Even though you would probably get full from just one plate. Ribs, Green Beans, Chicken, Pork Skin (I think they limit these though), Pulled Pork... I mean should I go on? They cook BBQ all week, and they open for just 2 days. I mean, come on if that's not dedication for BBQ cooking I don't know what is. Lets start off with the BBQ. It falls off the fork and melts in your mouth. The flavor is second to none. If you could imagine, all the BBQ that you ever had to eat had to have some sort of sauce to it right? Not this one. This BBQ has been lathered with Sweatman's mustard based sauce and been cooking with it before it reached your plate. When I ate this, I didn't need any other sauce. I don't think it could've been better with any other sauce. All in all, you can tell my experience was amazing. I wouldn't think Bourdain was going to steer me any place wrong. This place is definitely a hidden gem, and I am so grateful that I got the chance to eat there. If I"m ever in town, I will be sure to be back for another all you can eat. And I'll be saving my appetite for it.

Can't say enough good things about Sweatman's. Traveling through SC on our way home from FL, I did a search for BBQ and drove a bit out of our way based on the reviews. We were not disappointed. Excellent food and excellent service. I'm not usually a fan of buffets, but I had no qualms about eating here.

First time there. The BBQ was good me personally didn't care for the BBQ sauce they used on the ribs but it was good! The Mac N' Cheese, green beans, rice and hash were good next time I'm there I will do a repeat performance!

This place has been on my list since before the ownership change but I couldn't make it because of their short schedule. I've learned to temper my enthusiasm for "famous" BBQ joints so entered with an open mind. The place itself is awesome. I love the converted old home. The staff is similarly homey and welcoming. The food gets mixed reviews from my point of view. I'm really sorry I couldn't have made it sooner before it apparently has gone down hill. The pulled pork is great. I chose to try the inside and outside pig, light and dark respectively. Tender and tasty. The light was dryer. The vinegar North Carolina sauce was some of the best I've had. I didn't care for the mustard sauce that was yellower in color. It just tasted like mustard but I loved the one that was a bit redder. Nice! A little sweet and a little spicy. These both are good with the pork. I liked the sides. None were awesome but they were all solid. I tried the baked beans with bacon, Mac n cheese, and butter beans. The baked beans were the best choice. I passed on the overly soaked mayo slaw. I would have liked some greens. The banana pudding is great. The ribs are some of the worst I've had. They smelled like they were cooked yesterday and left in an old shoe and tasted like braised pork with a hint of their mustard sauce. Nasty. There's no hint of smoke. They're grey with a hint of yellow and look as bad as they taste. I asked about when they were cooked and my fears were confirmed. You're open 2 days/week. Do what you have to do to get your lazy selves out of bed and smoke me some fresh Bbq! It's $15 for all you can eat. It's less at Duke's in Walterboro and the food is better. So is the selection. If you hadn't served me these ribs I would have given you 4 stars without hesitation. There's no excuse for serving me food without any life left in it.

Get there!

Go SC Q!

I can't believe I haven't reviewed Sweatman's. The food here is just as good as everyone says it is, and the staff here are absolutely lovely. Sweatman's is out of the way for most people but it's not that far from the I-95 and definitely worth a detour five times as long.

Oh my goodness. I would drive from Kentucky to eat here it's so good. Everything is fantastic. Got a tour from the pitmaster and had the best banana pudding of my entire life. Alice is awesome, sweet as can be and worth it just to see her. Cannot go wrong here if youy love bbq.

  • Tyler L.

  • Bruce K.

Go SC Q!
